Response to the Clean Air Strategy 2019

As one of the UK's largest suppliers of domestic biomass fuel, we were very interested in what initiatives the Government would publish within Monday's Clean Air Strategy 2019.

As expected, with the burning of solid fuel (such as wood and coal) currently producing 38% of the UK’s emissions of fine particulate matter, the Government is committed to prohibiting the sale of the most polluting fuels and inefficient stoves.

Disappointingly, exactly how they are planning to do this is still under consultation with a response due early in 2019, however we expect that within a couple of years we will see the following -

1. Firewood will only be available with a moisture content of <20% for immediate consumption. Schemes such as 'Ready to Burn' will become more prolific, and only outlets with the facilities to provide properly dried firewood will be able to supply.

2. Traditional coal will be unavailable, and only low sulphur treated alternatives will be acceptable.

3. Stove design legislation will change, however as the Stove Industry Alliance and the largest stove manufacturers have done an excellent job of producing new stoves which produce a low particulate matter, the stoves of tomorrow are available today. As the demand for stoves shows no signs of abating, we expect Ecodesign compliant and Defra Exempt stoves to become the norm, and consumer awareness of these designs to grow.

If these reforms are set to change your business, speak to us at White Horse Wholesale today about your plans for the coming season and how we can support your business. We were one of the early adoptors of the Woodsure 'Ready to Burn' scheme and are focused on providing the best quality product at the best possible prices. With domestic coal consumption currently running at 500,000 tonnes per annum, the next two years will potentially see many new customers turn to quality firewood and briquettes, so ensure your business is ready for the transition and speak to us about these opportunities today.
